The electroplating (except copper and silver) of metal lapel pin is not easy to fade unless the electroplating coat falls off. But after all, the plating color is only a thin layer attached to the metal surface, so it can't be unchangeable or permanent. After some time, the color of the plating will gradually fade due to long-term use and improper rubbing behavior, while it is a normal situation.
The electroplating is the process of using electrolysis to coat a metal membrane on the surface of metal or other materials. Thus, it can prevent oxidation (such as corrosion) and improve wear resistance, electrical conductivity, reflective, corrosion resistance and enhance aesthetics.
Speaking of electroplating, take gold plating for example, it can be divided into gold e-coating, imitation gold plating and genuine gold plating. The genuine gold plating is expensive, usually when customers have specific requirements for genuine gold plating, we will proceed accordingly. In other cases, we usually plate the imitation gold + e-coating for protection, which could solve the issue that the imitation gold color would fade easily, but also no need to worry about the expensive cost as genuine gold.
Generally, there are three reasons for the discoloration. First, the bottom layer is not good, the base should be plated with silver. Copper plating or nickel plating as base will cause color changing, because copper or nickel will spread to the gold layer. Second, the gold plating layer is too thin. Third, the product is not cleaned by pure water thoroughly. If it is imitation gold, it should be protected with high quality transparent coating.
Therefore, customers should choose the correct plating method and reliable manufacturers according to their actual positioning and demand of products to avoid unnecessary problems and loss.
